North Sydney Coal Loader

The North Sydney Coal Loader was the first project in Australia to use the 3.2 x 1.8m Onyx custom panels. These are built without a frame or backsheet, creating a large translucent panel that casts beautiful shadows on the ground. At the time of this installation, these were the largest custom built panels in the world, weighing 400kg each. 

Every aspect of this system was unique, as it was originally designed by an architect to be a green space for the public. Smart Commercial Solar ultimately redesigned the system to work appropriately for the structure and the energy yield. This included the addition of 3 dual axis trackers.

The overall project was quite complex, not only in its site constraints but in managing multiple stakeholders. The delivery of this system required specialised lifting on site amongst other trades and contractors.
