In Australia, recycling technologies are advancing rapidly. Up to 95% of materials from solar panels—including glass, silicon, and precious metals—can now be recovered. Initiatives such as Victoria’s ban on solar panels in landfill highlight the government’s commitment to addressing this issue. 

In Queensland, an innovative solar panel recycling plant which opened in October 2024 is designed to dismantle panels down to their core materials. Located on Brisbane's southern fringe, the Pan Pacific plant is set to process 240,000 panels annually, with 30,000 of those being part of a Smart Energy Council pilot program funded by the government. 

However, challenges persist. Efficient recycling infrastructure is still developing, and it’s not easy for consumers to participate in the process. Which Parts of The Solar Panel Can Be Recycled?

Silicon-Based Solar Panels 

  • Glass: 95% can be reused. 
  • Aluminum (Metal Frames): Can be re-molded for new cell frames. 
  • Plastic Encapsulation: Evaporates during thermal processing and can be reused as a heat source. 
  • Silicon Cells: 80% can be reused directly after thermal treatment. 

Thin-Film-Based Solar Panels 

  • Glass: 90% of glass elements are recovered and can be re-manufactured. 
  • Semiconductor Materials: 95% are separated and reused. 
  • Solid Matter: Interlayer materials are removed, leaving behind pure materials. 
  • Liquid Components: Purified through precipitation and dewatering, useful materials can be extracted.
